Today towards the end of Saturday School I gave the children, aged nine, eight, seven and six their scripts for the end-of-year production. This year we are doing MacBeth again. We did it three years ago and so the three older children had done a simpler version three years ago.
I was amazed to see these young children simply accept sixteen pages of Shakespeare without a murmur. Each searched out his or her own name and highlighted it. As they were doing so some of them remembered parts from three years ago and this pleased me enormously. But the jaw-dropping part was the panache with which each child moved through the script, in full knowledge of which scene followed which. They knew their MacBeth!
